Inside the lighthouse; each stone was hand-carved and interlocked, eliminating the need for mortar. Presumably this makes the lighthouse much stronger, but of course it was incredibly labour intensive. The sign says in 1847-48, it took 70 men 10 months to build the lighthouse - cutting the rock from cliffs several kilometres away, carving the stones to exact sizes and then dragging them here.
