Fire in the Outback

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Australia | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

My name is Andrew Hughes. I’m 29 and every day I live the dream.

I live 1000km from the Australian coastline – almost in the middle of the country – on our family sheep and cattle property.

It’s remote, but it’s a constant inspiration. Through my photography I try to tell my story of living and working on the land and its endless contrasts.

Our way of life can be gruelling. It’s not for faint hearted. We often work 12 hour days in an environment that can be unforgiving. This series of photos is of my life at the moment. Every day seems to bring another fire. Conditions are perfect for them: an average of 45 degrees during the day with dry electrical storms at night.

I would love to continue working on the land and telling my story visually. I am always learning. That is the beauty of photography, your eye just gets stronger, and you are forever urging yourself to take a better shot. I love to challenge myself and I would love to win the opportunity to travel to Oman.
