Old Makkah, as seen here, has been grazed over for new hotels. Unfortunately, this has erased much of the architectural and cultural history of the city.

Saudi Arabia's dependence on cheap foreign labour means that The Makkah Development Plan, at a cost of 26.6bn, is being constructed by the thousands of men hailing from South Asia. Construction tends to break in the daytime due to the intense Arabian heat.

Ultimately, high end hotels with malls, such as these which sit right in front of the Grand Mosque, will overtake the landscape of the city.
