My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

A simple image is more powerful than a loud voice at a microphone. I love nothing more than capturing an instant of life as it is, raw. Nothing dolled up about it. Specifically, I love to take photos of people, hoping those who view the photo will see a story. I anticipate learning, as I know I have much to be taught. All I need is a camera and I am more than willing to fill my open book of a mind with more knowledge and growth than it can handle. I am original, creative, and have a desire to improve, to see the world, to tell a story.
The five photos I have submitted have all been taken while I am living in China teaching English to children as a volunteer. I have had many opportunities to be able to see China and meet these people who inspire me while making me think and feel something. Each story is as matchless as the people are. That is what I want to portray. The story of the town’s people who continue to talk to you even after you have told them you cannot speak Chinese and make a fool of yourself while buying Chinese cookies, a story about a woman who knows every trick in the book to get you to buy something and takes every measure to ensure you do buy something, the calming presence of a mother in the still prospect and the sleeping child she carries, a distraught student as consequence of a naughty behavior resulting in a strike on the "strike card", and the man who fishes alone. These photos I feel illustrate my ambition to develop my skills and storytelling, however, are not exemplars of my full potential. If given the chance, my priority is improvement and gratification. In return, telling a story. Educating and stirring feelings to send a message.
