Although I am living in China, I don't know a lick of Chinese (okay, enough to get me my occational but all too often McDonald's Big Mac). One night, while walking the streets of our hometown, Bengbu, I attempted to purchase a Chinese cookie. After many a game of charades, people from all down the street had gathered to watch the crazy American try to buy herself a cookie. My fine skills got me a cookie, eventually. But only after I had made a fool of myself in my ignorance. Luckily, the Chinese have a good sense of humor and warm hearts.

This is Tim, one of the students I teach currently. We have a rule that the kids can recieve strikes (a bad 'X' mark next to their name on a paper) if they are naughty. Once they have three strikes, they loose store (getting to pick out a prize) at the end of the day. Tim was acting up and spitting on another student while I was taking profile picures of all the students. Finally, when I could not stand his monstrosity any longer, I gave him his first strike, and of course, the crocodile tears came rolling. He was still crying about his one strike five minutes later when it was his turn to get his picture taken. Regardless of how miserable he could stretch that face, that strike still stuck.

Taken in the city of Huangshan, I found several groups of men seated at a river fishing in the middle of the busy city center. Streets, tall buildings, and bridge all aglow, this man fishes under the evening sky by himself. Whether for pay or pure sport, he fishes alone in solitude rather than with a group. Unlike many men who fish and smoke together as a social activity, he fishes unaccompanied.
