Northland and the Dunes

NEW ZEALAND | Sunday, 30 December 2007 | Views [651]

After the quite of Kahoe Farm Hostel we headed to unfortunately the loudest place we have been so far, Henderson Bay.  The small Hostel was a lovely design and built by the owner John and his Father, and the host John and his wife are great.  The place itself is under going modernisation, which we were not told off when we booked so that was a let down from the start; but it was all cleared up at the end of each day so it wasn’t too bad.  We arrived and the host John showed us around and our room was great, huge light and full of natural light; but then he told us about the Possums.  It appears that they have had Possum problems due to the work going on and the exposed work areas that they can get into the wall and loft through, sure enough that night we were awoken by a Possum going crazy in the loft space behind our room; okay that happens but the following nights problems were man made!  Our first day here was good fun, we headed over to Ninety Mile beach for a ‘drive’ along this ‘public highway’ it even has a speed limit of 100 kph; the same as the main highways throughout NZ.  Andy tried to have a go at the Kite buggy, but as the wind was off shore it was not the best for him; but hey why not at least try.  That night was the ‘Possum’ night.  We had a lovely day the following day (but we were seriously tired because of that bl**dy Possum) driving up to Cape Reinga and the Light house to see the most Northern tip of mainland NZ, we have now seen all four most outer most mainland points in this order S – W – E and finally N.  Stopping off to see some other sights, such as the Giant Dunes at the Northern tip of Ninety mile beach, and the White Sand beaches of the East coast of Northland. We returned to the hostel exhausted from the full day and the lack of sleep from the previous night to find that not only was the hostel now ‘over’ full to the point that 5 people were sharing a double room, but they were mostly German Journey men; tradesman that are on a traditional 3 year and 1 day journey around the world to work at their trade after their training had finished back home.  The hostel host had 4 of these journey men working there already and these were the friends of them coming for Christmas, no hassle until the host went home at mid-night and then all hell let loose.  At 0230 hr’s they were stood outside ‘howling’ like Wolves at the top of their voices, needless to say everyone in the hostel was woken and Andy was out the door light a shot giving his ‘thoughts’ to them in his usual straight to the point bluntness that he has; then at 0330hr’s one of them decided that our room looked better than his so he just walked right in (you can only guess Andy’s reaction to that!)  We had a word with the host who, give him his due; was so apologetic and refunded us the nights stay.  He had to do this to all that complained, so they lost a lot of $’s that night, what you get for over booking maybe?  Saying all of this, it’s going to be a very good hostel and it’s in a lovely location; so we would consider returning but only if NO work is going on and NO German journey men are there. We had to head out to our Christmas home, we really HOPE there’s no work going on here.
