My Scholarship entry - Mother Nature: Giving and Taking in Rural Nepal

My name is Elliot Eliash and I am a native Californian who recently returned from backpacking in Asia with a newfound love for photography.
My family is fairly untraveled and when confronted with the fact that I was quitting a good job with a one-way ticket to a country I had never visited, the responses ranged from confused to frustrated. Photography became a way to both interact with my surroundings while I was away and bring my family along into a lifestyle I found so enjoyable and fascinating. Photography has become my gateway to exploration and the way I can translate that joy to those around me more effectively than words ever could.
The ever-increasing success of picture based internet sites like Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook reflect of how visual humans are; we love to see things in different ways. It triggers something primal in us allowing us to memorialize and reflect, even if the image is of something foreign. I am an amateur photographer with professional aspirations. I hope to harness the creative power of photographs to tell a story that immerses the viewer into the time and place it was taken. A picture can indeed be worth a thousand words; I'm hoping World Nomads can help me choose the right ones through this experience.
