My Scholarship entry: A 'place' I have visited - The Cycle of Lao Sericulture

Laos | Thursday, July 4, 2013 | 5 photos

My boyfriend and I were cleaning out his place one day and he said, “what about this?”, and handed me an Olympus OM-1. I looked down at this sad looking thing, all dusty and badly scratched but strangely fascinated by it.

As I travelled through Laos I saw beauty alongside landmine victims, smiley faces alongside the sadness of a dark past but the thing that captured my attention the most was the Laotian spirit: optimistic and humble. I overstayed in Laos to teach English. On my last day I took my students on a field trip. As I nervously watched them pass my camera around & each student take a picture, it clicked to me that seeing them happy snap pictures of each other in return made me the happiest person alive.

I believe that Jason’s experience and knowledge will provide me with the ability to learn new skills and build on existing ones. I look forward to Jason pushing me to my photographic limit in my quest to find ‘that’ photo. I believe that this scholarship will be a stepping stone into turning my dream of becoming a travel photographer a reality.

Jason, which gate should I meet you at?
