NICARAGUA | Friday, 28 November 2008 | Views [689] | Comments [5]

I am preparing to leave Managua and the kind hospitality of Paul and his family.  I am abandoning my plans to travel to the Corn Islands due to bad weather and instead am embarking on a one week Spanish Language Course in the old colonial town of Granada.  The school is a non profit organisation who fund social programs and I hope to have the chance to facilitate some drama workshops though them.

On the Ponies for Small Persons front, we are making some progress and have had some very interesting meetings.  Earlier in the week we went to San Marcos (about an hour from Managua in the gorgeous lush hills - i was actually cold!).  Here we had a meeting the the Director of Los Quinchos an extremely charasmatic Italian lady who has lived here for some time.  And she gets things done!

Los Quinchos is an organisation that has several programs running including work with kids that live on the rubbish dump, glue sniffing street kids and children from very violent families - some of whom have watched their dad being killed by their mothers with barbed wire strangulation or rocks to the head.  Sorry for the graphic description, but that's the reality.  They are in contact with these children everyday and give them basic schooling, meals and somewhere to sleep.  In the afternoons, evening and weekends they participate in arts workshops (different types of dance, music, handicrafts) and sports.  Once the children and young adults have passed through the program they are given the choice of remaining or leaving.  Those that stay then go back onto the street and try to recruit and help other kids in need.  Sounds absolutely brilliant and had I known about them before I would have tried to volunteer with them.  When we visited some of the boys were weaving brightly coloured hammocks before a huge mural of Frida!  I will try and get these photos up.  Some of the kids were also helping out in the pizza cafe attched.

Our hope is that we can work with Los Quinchos to link the children most in need to the ponies.  There may be land nearby that we use to keep the ponies. Fingers crossed . . .

Just off now for another meeting with a veterinary who runs a free clinic for animals.

Keep commenting!

Hi Eleanor,

Great to read your blog and mails, been pretty snowed under here with work put an acrobatic double act together in 4 days with Laura a friend who i have not previously worked with, and is learning to base! Every one else are preparing for the 203 party which will have a dungeon and loads of themed installations. Had some snow last weekend in the peaks so went climbing with Guy at the Foundry climbing center instead. Got the Panto job, starts soon, show starts after Dec 27th, no news on xmas hope to have peeps up for new year although dad seems busy with new job, mental health worker with elderly.

Sory to hear about your eyebrows! I don't know what will happen although they may have started growing back by now, they should be fine as it is only once but you could start plucking them as they grow to get used to the feeling as it hurts the 1st few times.

La arrana sounds awsome but some what un-nerving, sorry to take spiders side as well, bet you wish you had not mentioned it to us all, at least its sure to get a reaction.

Hope the coast is nice and you get some much deserved holiday.

Thinking of you and wish you luck in finding work.

Y podemos hablar en espanol aproxima ves. Que te ir muy muy bien. Cuidado con las cejas.

Un beso muy grande para te,

Ros!e xx

Hey, that`s interesting as I`ve been a little concerned about that spider, too, tho` true enuff if you`d got bitten by it I`d have been a lot more concerned !! Glad Rosie`s here now to add her wisdom & common sense to the proceedings tho` I`m wondering what mischiefs were veiled in Spanish! Again, lots a love & Mildness & keep the news & up-dates coming. xx

Dearest Eleanor ,was really good to talk on phone yesterday.Lovely to hear about where you are & what its like ... sounds wonderful esp the hammoks & old chairs!!I can just see myself lazily swinging in the shade of an old stucco wall... getting `lost` in the wide expanse of blue sky... no,no, dont shatter the illusion.. !Went to see film last nite about the IRA 1981 `DIRTY` protest & Hunger strike in the Maze prison, Belfast ... great thing to do on a Wed nite(?)..... & was uexpectedly joined by Mary & her friend, which was a lovely surprise!By the way, keep forgetting to tell you how well I`m loking after your scarf..... its keeping me so cosy & feeling a bit closer to you.( OK , yes you will get it back!! Ok must sign off & go to Sharpham now ... last class till end of Jan` 09. Some of us are going to cove nr Bigbury on Sat to collect rubbish off the beach. We`re doing it with Mandala Trust. Its sponsered & money goes to a community of children in Cambodia who are living on a rubbish dump ... to provide them with sustainable shelter, food meds, & education. Sounds familiar... ?Anyhow you all know how i love picking-up rubbish off beaches.Bye bye, all love, Mildness xxxx
