    Staring out from a monastery, the Himalaya are framed by snow and barbed wire. The space and silence of the mountains are in stark contrast to the congestion and noise of the city. The prayers of the threadbare flags, weathered by the elements, seem written on the mountains and sky. Views[310] I encountered two Nepalese children on a remote mountain pass. Unencumbered by the pressures of the city, they were at ease in the presence of strangers. The engaging stare of the boy in the brightly coloured hood was surprisingly interrupted by the unabashed curiosity of his friend. Views[275] As life in frenetic Kathmandu stops and starts, things move on as usual in the slow paced surrounding hills. Here labouring women, towering loads atop tiny legs, trudge upwards into the mist. Views[233] As the protests abated, we were able to explore the city. Here a homeless woman takes refuge from the frosty Kathmandu winter’s night. Swaddled in rags, the flames illuminate her face as she worships the warmth. Views[232] As we arrived in Kathmandu, the city was grinding to a halt under the strain of widespread protests over petrol price hikes. I captured this protester as our concerned driver tried to navigate the maze of closed roads and fire barricades. The relaxed face of the protestor contrasts with the urgency of the scene, and tells the story of an impoverished city in which protests are all too commonplace.
