The 'real' Japan

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

An example of the modern Japanese tendency for syncretism is the river trail leading to the lake of Tazawako in Akita prefecture. This rather impressive tree is adorned with Shinto housing for the spirit that lives there, while also sporting Buddhist iconography and a nearby shrine and temple complex.

The influence of ancient Shinto architecture is also present in the specially designed red bridge to mimic similar bridges built in Japan's ancient history.
