So, I think the highlight of our time spent in Merida was definately the free salsa lessons offered by our hostel (Nomades)! Soon after we check in, the whole hostel is gearing up for the lively lesson. A huge group turns out (including some friends from our last hostel) and we have a great time laughing our way through the steps (and the Australians who have no rythym).
The Guadalupe Festival is also starting today in Merida so the streets are closed off and there are musical and dance performances in the town's many plazas (pretty European type city with some beautiful architecture). It is really festive and giving us a good picture of the people and culture of this region.
The next day, we take a day trip to Uxmal to check out some more Mayan ruins. It is more peaceful and in a beautiful setting with forests and constructed landscaping, such as the plateaus they build up to display their works of architecture. You can also actually climb up the buildings and pyramids and there are great views at the top.
Back at the hostel, its time for salsa lesson #2. We can't wait to show off our new moves at all the weddings we are attending next year ;)
Our last morning in Merida, we gather our crew of hostel friends and check out the city's lively market that we have heard so much about. So we were expecting a handicraft market with authentic crafts and whatnot. Wrong. It was more like a giant underground maze that resembles a mix between Chinatown (with the copious amounts of crap for sale) and New York City subway (with all the hustle and bustle). The most interesting item for sale was live Mayan insects bedazzled with jewels meant to be worn as a broach. We didnt buy anything but it was exhilarating none the less. We all came out alive without having to sacrifice any members of our group. Whew!
On to Tulum!
