My Scholarship entry - Living in the Shadow of A Giant

Nepal | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

I love photography because I believe it is one of the most powerful ways to document the world around us. There is so much to experience and learn it is impossible to do it all. Photography is capable of narrowing this gulf because it provides the least amount of corrosion to the experience. I strive to push my talent to the limits of its capacity; to capture the most sincere representation of the scene in front of me. To me it is the scene which is doing all the work, providing the chance to capture its beauty and emotion.

This contest holds particular interest to me as the desert holds a special place in my heart. I first gained a romantic vision of it upon reading Wilfred Thesiger’s tale of Crossing The Empty Quarter. The stark harshness holds a particular beauty and the parsimony requisite for a successful journey strikes home with me as a climber.

I believe I have done some of the best work of my life in the Atacama and would love to photograph in an arid landscape again. One of my life long devotions is learning and I welcome the opportunity to work with an expert. The potential challenge that Oman would provide scintillates my soul.
