I’ve been back in London for a month now. I returned in the hope of finding work in the theatre – pipe dream maybe but who knows. Anyway in between stressing about work and money, I’ve been able to really enjoy being here in Summer.
While I’ve been traveling I’ve been appreciating more and more how the change in the weather affects a place. I come from a place where the weather rarely changes and the temperature only varies between hot and bloody hot. This year I’ve had the extreme fortune to experience London in winter and now in Summer. Oh what a difference the sun makes! A couple of weeks ago I found myself with some time to spare before a matinee in West End so I decided to have an impromptu picnic in Victoria park. Yeah, me and everyone working in the vicinity apparently. Every inch of grass was occupied by businessmen and construction workers in various state of dress, enjoying a lunchtime nap in the sun. And this by no means was the only park in London experiencing this degree of mass occupancy. Hampstead Heath is truly a sight to behold, especially on the weekend where one wonders how the hills don’t actually sink with the weight of almost ‘standing room only’ capacity. Londoners, it appears, love the sun and take every advantage of enjoying it. I’ll admit, even I get exited now when I see a bright, sunny morning.
