THE Trip - Finally

Typical farming day

IRELAND | Monday, 22 March 2010 | Views [373]

Today I went to an auction – nothing new there, I basically grew up at auctions – but this one was for cows or, more specifically, calves. They were so cute that I was kind of upset to learn that these little fellas were going to Italy to be served up as veal. Such is the way in the country – you know exactly where your food is coming from.

In the afternoon we fixed a fence, with barbed wire no less. ‘You get a few scratched but eventually yer hands toughen up.’ Assured farmer John. To complete the day, we shovelled horse shit for a couple of hours. These horses did not so much as give a nod of thanks, they just proceeded to pile it up again – lovely. Thank goodness there’s a hot shower waiting for me!
