Seeing the world and how it ticks

Adventure: Tall Ships 2012

Ireland | Thursday, January 10, 2013 | 5 photos

I am a 19 year old Journalism student in my first year of study in Dublin City University. The reasons I chose this course are largely similar to why I'm applying for this scholarship. I can't stand the idea of being pigeon-holed. The thought of doing the same thing every day for the rest of my life just makes me squirm. Photojournalism is an escape from that.

Really the chance to see the world, to record places, stories and lives that would otherwise be unheard of is an exhilarating prospect. In the last two summers I went to the World Youth Day in Madrid and participated in two Tall Ships Races, experiences I never thought I'd do that ended up being the best weeks of my life. I love the thrill of being thrown completely out of my comfort zone and being left to, sometimes literally, sink or swim.

There will be other entries with far more technical skill for your consideration. However I want my work to convey something, a feeling or an attachment, that I don't think you can get through editing. That's why my pictures are not edited, I think you get the feeling in a live shot or not at all.

What I will give you is total commitment, an insatiable work ethic and an open mind.
