My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Mongolia | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

Everything in life is transient. I found that out the hard way one Tuesday morning 4 years ago, when a doctor told me I needed major surgery immediately, or I would die within days. After months of uncertainty, I came out the other end, knowing 2 things for sure: that I had stared Death down, and that every second spent deferring one’s passions is a second wasted. My personal passion is photography. We cannot escape our own mortality, or the fading of memories, the reimagining of places, spaces or feelings, but we can capture a moment. That moment might exist in a fleeting glance, a panoramic view or a single perfect shard of light. Being able to observe someone like Jason, and work alongside him would be an amazing opportunity to learn, hone my ability to frame and compose, and gain the depth of technical knowledge that makes taking a risk easier. I have a natural affinity for destinations that many would consider mad: Iceland in the depths of winter, the wilds of Mongolia, a Himba Kraal in Namibia. I see this scholarship as something that could open the door for me to pursue an abiding passion and allow me to take those who share my images to places they would never normally go.
