Simple pleasures: a boy revels in the spray from a fire truck, rolled out for the annual Naadam Festival, near the ancient Mongolian capital of Karakorum. The festival draws Mongolians from across the region to socialize and show off their prowess in the traditional sports of cross country horse racing, wrestling and archery.

The light within: a young Monk tends lamps in a monastery in Ulaanbaatar. Despite the murder of thousands of monks and the desecration of monasteries by the Revolutionaries in the early 1920s, the practice of the religion persisted. Today upwards of 90% of Mongolians consider themselves Buddhist.
