Hi All,
After our stressful day of travel we really didn´t feel up to doing
much but decided that a walk on the beach was just what we needed.
We spoke with a couple of the dive companies and ended up tentatively
booking a snorkelling trip for the following day withe the dive company
at out resort but since no one else had currently registered and
a trip required a minimum of 3 a snorkelling trip looked doubtful.We
walked the length of the beach then head back to our room when the
sound of thunder and the lightening started moving closer to the island.
day 1
Looked at snorkelling trip board in dive centre and no one indicted
a desire to join us on a snorkelling trip so we set off independently
for an early morning swim. The water was warm and whilst visibility was
good clarify was only so so as we had a storm the previous night which
may have stirred up the particles in the water. We saw a few sharks and
then saw a monster which momentarily
stopped both of our hearts beating.Thankfully we both regained our
composure and our hearts started to beat again even if they were
slightly tachycardic. In reality the shark was probably only about 6
feet long but magnified underwater it looked 10feet long with teeth the
size of butchers knives.Anyway they are generally harmless. The coral
although extensive damaged in some places was impressive and the
further out you swam the more abundant and colourful it became so it
was definitely worth the result. It was like gazing upon an underwater
coral garden that was filled with a huge variety of fish .We had been
in the water for over two hours and after almost getting caught in a
rip we decided that it was time to return to shore.Just as we were
about to turn and start dog paddling back to shore we saw a massive
eagle ray launch itself out of the water only to discover
that a group was just about to set off on
a
snorkelling trip.We briefly contemplated not going but thought why not
you can rest when you are dead.We climbed aboard the boat with a
group of about 7 or 8
Malaysian´s from two families and off we went.We had a good out and
were lucky enough to find a couple of big turtles that were feeding
on the sea grass and algae on the sea bed.I think from memory that we
were pretty much exhausted after this so we had a late lunch then
rested for a couple of hours before walking over to the other side of
island on a jungle path.We discovered that the grass was
definitely not greener on the other side despite it having the most
expensive resort on the island .We encountered some huge monitor lizards
on the
path that seemed to contemplated eating us whole but instead raced
away in terror when they realised that even though we smelt pretty
rotten we were in fact very much alive and heading straight for them.
Gluttons for punishment we headed out for a late afternoon snorkelling session and returned to Shark point area yet again.
Bye for now,
David and Vanessa
