Tangier

MOROCCO | Thursday, 12 March 2009 | Views [1076]

Hi All,

Getting a bit behind on the blog as have had a string of dud internet cafes where the internet seems to be running on an old 2400 baud modem rather than high speed broadband.

Some updated comments on the road trip, fes and tangier. bit behind to will only dot point my diary entries. Refer to previous road trip and fes for other updates.

Tangier.

A city perched on the edge of the mediterranean and the port for ferries to spain from morocco. Most of Morocco is french influence but this also has a strong spanish influence.

small medina for beginners;so many offers for dope on the streets to "make us happy for our holiday";most pensions like the staff are very tired and could do with overhaul;little sleep, noisy hostel called the palace and well may have been once but not now;kasbah on the hill leads through a fortress gate to glorious views from a cliff to the mediterrainean and a big fat rat enjoying the sun;pizza, bread and partiseries everywhere but no ham in sight but cats in the kitchen living in hope; foods taste good as the moroccans learned well from the french and spanish before booting them out of the country;

move to a new hostel which cost more but feels a bit better;music shop in the back streets canvasing gnawa music;touts telling us not to go into the medina without a guide - oooh so scary - not;piggy day - (bf) honey sandwiches and dried apricots (morning tea) icecream 3 scoops the size of gumballs - contracting issue again! (lunch) pizza and glorious chocolate cake (afternoon tea) chilli chips and lollies (dinner) crossiants and lollies;moroccan movie at old cinema LES COEURS BRULES arabic with french subtitles and good movie with excellent imagery showcased a life story in Fes medina;men on sidewlk sitting at tables drinking coffee watching people and the world go by. We watch them watching; where are the tourists? only a handful in Tangier at the moment; hazy view of mountains in Spain and maybe the whistle of OLE from the breeze; a real looking wizard with dreadlocks on the street;money box wizard sliding in and out of the doorway of a bread shop begging. He makes good money; antique shop with beautiful antique brass bead hidden in backstreets of medina;beach boulevard with aquamarine seas; straight med holding hands walking down the street; any time is a good time for a chat to friends even in a car talking through the window on a one way street holding up the traffic; hard to dislike this town. It grows on you. Just different as every town in Morocco.

Tomorrow we head to Spain on the fast ferry then onto Saville. Better brush up on my Spanish Amigos.

Bye,

David and Vanessa
