Pantanal bonito

BRAZIL | Thursday, 27 November 2008 | Views [818]

Oi All,

Just arrived and staying at the HI hostel.

Pantanal jungle was too much effort. will write it later. Yes there is the same image in a few new photo galleries. We are having trouble with retarded brazilian system setups. The image is a screen shot from today and is a place holder so that we have cronological order for the blog as it shuffles empty folders.

Spent the day at balneario municipal. Sounds boring but isn´t. It is a giant natural aquarium in a river with clear green water. There are tour companies that charge a lot for half day tours to go to private places to see the same. We hired bikes from the hostel and rode the 7km to the municipal. Vanessa found it really hard going so we won´t do that again in a hurry. Saw a beautiful red macaw before entering. Got there and hired snorkelling gear and jumped into the slow running river in the jungle. It was only us so the water was clear and COLD. So many fish. Probably 50-70cm long! Drifted along for about 500m and then swam back up stream and swam back down again. Got too cold so had to get out and saw a tucan in the trees just metres away. Disapointed as we didn´t have a camera so I rode back into town to get the camera and some money to hire an underwater camera from the municipal. Pretty hot ride. Consumed 2lt of water just in one direction. Still in the pantanal and pretty hot. Got back about 1hr later with some water and biscuits for lunch. Fed most of the biscuits to the fish. Hired the camera and back into the water. Metup with a rickshaw driver from new york that we met at the pantanal and by the half the town was there and the water was stirred up by the lads doing bombs into the water. Free for locals and 10 reals for foreigners and it is such a nice place no wonder it got crowded. Back in the water and drifting downstream again. Great fun with the camera. Didn´t get many if any good shots but it wasn´t a pro camera! Later in the afternoon the macaws returned and we rode home. Saw tucans in the tree and Vanessa saw an armadillo along the side of the road.

Concert in town tonight. Celebrating a fruit harvest festival. any reason for a party. famous brazilian singer apparently.

Adues,

David & Vanessa
