Hola Amigos,
One more taxi story. Last night we had a taxi driver with rat cunning. It was peak hour traffic when we left the hotel and once on the freeway the driver saw an opportunity. He went up the off ramp down the road about 100m then down the on ramp back onto the freeway. Merged by essentially ramming his way into the traffic across the thick yellow lane separators and made up about 50m improvement from where we might have been...nice one Mr taxi driver.
On a sad note. We were walking down the mall a couple on nights ago and there was a teenage south american lad laying on the walkway who appeared to be dead. A security guard said he wasn't but his chest wasn't moving.
A lazy day. Didn't want any more museums or churches today. Went to mayer square to watch the change of the guard at the government palace. Turned out that Saturday was a much bigger performance than during the week and we got a parade around the square with a marching band and armed soldiers who performed skillful tricks twirling there rifles and precision marching steps. The performance lasted for about 1hr. Well worth it.
We then headed off for some lunch a street off the mall. The prices drop from western to local prices just in one block. When checking the menus we came across sopa de moron, the moron soup maybe ... not. Ended up with a nice 3 course meal for 12 soles total. That would be US$4 for both of us. Included a nice potato soup, chicken rice and salad and a potato cake with mustard sauce. Delicious. Finished off with a 1lt chocolate icecream back at the hotel watching the olympic gymnastics.
Heading off to Balastra (sic) island tomorrow. The poor mans galapagos. I think it will be the poverty stricken mans galapagos. We will see...
Sure beats working :-)
Adios,
David and Vanessa.
