My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Leonard W Elliot (Devon, England)

United Kingdom | Wednesday, July 3, 2013 | 5 photos

As a child I recall spending hours flicking through National Geographic magazines, being fascinated by the stories the images told. One photo essay that stuck in my mind was the Hutterites by William Albert Allard. From then onwards, I knew I wanted to emulate him and the compassionate way he makes images.

My upbringing was unorthodox as I was home schooled until my teenage years before attending a Rudolf Steiner School in Devon. After completing a college course in photography, I travelled around Croatia and Serbia, which in turn fuelled my passion for travel photography. In 2008 I completed a BA in Documentary Photography at Newport University, tutored by Magnum Photographers Mark Power and Martin Parr.

Today, I am an aspiring documentary photographer based in London, intrigued by people and how their lives interconnect and shape the communities they inhabit.

This Scholarship would give me a unique opportunity to step out of my comfort zone as an image-maker. I would relish the chance to be mentored by such an experienced photographer providing an opportunity to tap into his enormous knowledge, gaining an invaluable insight into the mentality of a National Geographic photographer
