I found it very difficult to find any English language bookshops in Japan. There are a handfull around where you can get Lonely Planet guide books, but you really have to ask around, I found the best way was to Google for them.
If you are not in Japan already, buy your guide books before you come and while I am at it, buy your adapter plugs too. Retail Japan doesn't seem to cater for foreigners very much.
