Pompeii
– On our way to the amazing Greek island of Corfu, the tour lead us
on an amazing journey to the amazing city of Pompeii... Pompeii was
destroyed by the volcanic explosion of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD and as a
result was very well preserved.
The excavation of the city began in
1800 and the city now serves as a snap shot into what life was like
2000 years ago!
This city had everything, roads with single or dual
lane signage, water fountains, a bakery (with a wood fire identical
to ones we use today and perfectly preserved), bath houses with
saunas, fast food restaurants, just everything you could imagine
including a brothel... Yes that is right, this city had its own red
light district that was well advertised from the streets, and hanging
over each room was a fresco advertising the type of services that
were offered by the ladies (in case the gentlemen where not fluent in
the local language, it was pretty graphic!) The most amazing thing on
this historic site however was the 4 bodies that were found perfectly
preserved in the volcanic explosion. The most disturbing was a man
looking who looked as though he died of asphyxiation and a dog in a
most distressing position..
Our guide informed us that they have only
discovered 75% of this city so who knows what else is yet to be
discovered! It was a pretty cool day!
