Happy New Year 1392

Iran | Monday, July 1, 2013 | 4 photos

Every time my family took me out on a trip, I always took my camera with me. As a child I didn’t think much about technique, all I cared about, was that our journey was well documented.
Soon, I became the official family photographer. I piled hundreds of 35mm prints along with dozens of rolls of undeveloped film –it’s too expensive– my mother used to say.
At college I majored in communication/media studies, and while that allowed me to explore different media, I feel it diverted me from photography. I felt misplaced.
In December 2012, I decided to quit my job and pursue my passion for travel and photography; I set off on an eight months journey around the Middle East, hoping that I would figure things out along the way.
On the road, while working hard to take pictures that tell a story, I’ve been looking for an opportunity like this scholarship, a chance to prove myself, learn from a pro like Jason Edwards and eventually fulfill my life-long dream of becoming a successful travel photographer.
My ultimate goal is that my pictures will contribute to look differently at amazing things and look again at the things we take for granted.
Sincerely,
Cuauhtémoc Velázquez
