Under a historic bridge in the ancient city of Isfahan, a group of music enthusiasts enjoys the melodies emerging from a violin. In the Islamic republic, the ban on alcohol and the enforced separation of unrelated men and women uniquely shape the leisure time the youths spend during their Nowruz holidays.

A family of tourists takes a break from sightseeing at Qu’ran gate in the southern city of Shiraz to enjoy a picnic on a traditional Persian rug. Shiraz is one of the most popular destinations for the local tourism during Nowruz, as it is the resting place of the venerated poets Hafiz and Saadi. Thousands flock to Shiraz to pay their respects every spring.

Nuts of every kind and size, along with sweets and dried fruits are offered to relatives and friends who visit each other on Nowruz. According to tradition, the youths visit the elders first, who in turn pay the visit later that same day. Here, a man compares prices at a delicacies store in Teheran. The economic sanctions that the Iranian economy faces have had a strong impact in the pocket of the people as the prices of special commodities such as nuts during Nowruz skyrocketed due to inflation.
