The World is Not Enough

Kuala (Bear) Lumpur

The coach we took from Pak Bara to Kuala Lumpur, that was supposed to get in at 0730, actually disgorged us at 5am. As you would expect, this came as a bit of a shock to the system. After a few minutes of frantic gesticulation with the driver we decided to make the most of a bad situation, and I went in search of an ATM to get some cash. After 15 minutes of fruitless searching I returned to Lydia who was guarding the bags very well. "but there's one in the bus station, look!" she said. So off I went, and 10 minutes later we were in a taxi on our way to the hotel. They were very helpful and gave us our room with minimal fuss.

Over the next few days we did our best to explore the city on foot, but soon found how convenient the Skytrain was. Situated at the bottom of our road was one station, and there was another a ten minute walk away. One day we decided to visit the Petronas Towers, so we went to get tickets.

"Come back tomorrow" we were told.

"What kind of time do the tickets run out?" I said.

"Well, if you get here at 8am there will be a queue of around 200 people in front of you".

So the next morning I was up at 6am, and on my way to get tickets for the Skybridge trip. Thankfully there were only 30 people in front of me when I arrived, but by the time the ticket office opened there had to be at least 350 in the queue.

Tickets secured I went to wake Lydia and tell her of our good fortune. Her enthusiasm was completely underwhelming, but she came along nonetheless. The view was good, but not quite what we'd expected, although we did get the essential shots of Bagpuss on the skybridge!

Other than that we frequented a mall fairly often as it had awesome internet access (for Asia), drank many Starbucks, and bought ourselves new glasses as christmas presents to each other.

Two days before our time in Malaysia was up we went to the bus station to book tickets for our onward journey, only to discover that there was a public holiday coming up and we struggled to get ticket to Singapore. After much snarling at the touts we eventually got them, but not at the price I wanted, and two days later we were on the road again!
