Day 40 - Happy Easter!

NEPAL | Sunday, 23 March 2008 | Views [386] | Comments [1]

Probably my most pathetic easter. Despite an extensive search, i had only managed to find an asian cheapo version of a kinders toy egg, so there was not a great deal of chocolate consumed! When I met the staff i gave them a chunk of toblerone, but most didn't understand what easter was and couldn't comprehend a chocolate egg (eggs are from chickens? how can they be chocolate?).

I was at the office bright and early, catching a bus to the hotel Everest. Seeing Kranti, he welcomed me with a "what are you doing here?". A bit of confusion resulted in me catching the bus (as planned) to the hotel himalaya where i met my group and we set off on our tour. I had thought from the office log book that there would be three guys and a girl, but there were actually three women! Plus Kurma's canadian girlfriend. They didn't know it was easter either, so my mars-bar present was a bit odd to them.

The tour was ok, but not the most interesting guide. Still I saw many things I wouldn't have otherwise, mainly the Kumari (living goddess) in Durbar Square! Three of the poms had actually visited the square after their arrival, unaware that the tour would take them through it. But noone, including myself, had been to the monkey temple. Although quite interesting, especially to half the group who hadn't been to asia, it was just another stupa and temples that I had seen enough of!

After the tour I headed back to Thamel to pack. An email from Dad told me of what to expect trekking, and i quickly realised how much stuff I didn't have! On most parts i didn't worry, though I might regret it! I rushed around to buy some cheapo pants and a beanie, though when I was in the shop the keeper asked me if I wanted Marijuana with that! umm no thanks i dont smoke.

There was to be a group welcome dinner tonight, though it took me a while to find. luckily i bumped into the guide who was having a cup of tea at a stall. Now with some directions, i headed off looking for the restaurant which I was sure began with a V. It actually began with a B, though I was hesitant when the waiters encouraged me to enter!

The welcome dinner was spectacular, though i cringed at the prices. A beer was twice as much as Id pay in Thamel, but thankfully Ravi's generousity had covered the actual meal and cultural show. The poms are a nice group and Kurma's encouragement to dance was a laugh. many free rounds of Ratsi, a cheap rice wine (quite strong) followed, though it seemed that only Roger and I were drinking them!

We farewelled after being briefed on tomorrows happenings. It was raining but the Ratsi encouraged me to brave the streets as I headed off to Thamel. 500m later the bus pulled up alongside me, the driver saying that the clients had asked to ferry me home for my safety! I reassured them that I would be ok, despite not completely assured myself. Thankfully i retained my image and had no problems, and I must say that it is easier to cross the roads after rice wine than during the day!

Sorry you didn't get any Easter eggs. In sympathy, we only had half a dozen each choosing instead to eat cup cakes, pikelets, home made apple pie, bacon and egg rolls. We were going to have Raksi, but had to settle for Crown Lagers and chardonnay.
Happy Easter Chris'
