Wroclaw - a love for life

Everyone told me there is no way not to fall in love with Wroclaw. “What could be so marvelous about it…?” I thought, “In the end, it’s just a city!”
Wroclaw is a city in southwestern Poland. All Polish cities have their Rynek – a main square of four sides which is literally the heart of the city. I didn’t suppose though that the Rynek of Wroclaw would turn out to be the heart of my fantasies too.
I will always remember the first time I stepped there. It was evening, just after sunset. The sky was painted in that magically soft blue color which perfectly fitted the old style lamps. Before me was standing the wonderful Ratusz – the old City Hall which looks rather like a castle, with its ornaments, yellow-brownish facade and a rich triangle roof with a clock tower. Around it, there were the colorful buildings which looked like materialized houses of a doll’s world. The bells of the Ratusz tower were ringing. Saxophone music came from somewhere behind the corner. A guitarist was tenderly filling the air with sounds of Spanish lands, on another corner. But the best of all was that old man, with long white hair and beard, who was making soap bubbles. You know, those huuuge rainbow soap bubbles that can fly quite high in the air before they die…
Later I discovered that the Rynek of Wroclaw keeps thousands of secrets. You open one door and you happen to be in the pre-war Poland, in a place all of wood and candles, with Polish songs from the beginning of 20th century. You open a second door and you enter a contemporary gallery. And behind the third one, you discover a vinyl café with hundreds of music treasures… Then you find the fourth door and you discover the place where the experimental theatre in Europe was born – the Grotowski theatre. And if you walk out of any door, you might bump into them – the small metal dwarfs, which remained the symbol of the city after the Orange revolution. One of them is withdrawing money from the ATM, another is stealing chocolates from the sweet shop, a third one is sleeping on the street in front of a hotel… They are all around the city. I never bought and I will never buy this “Dwarfs’ map”, because I prefer to meet them surprisingly, and only when They want to meet Me.
One evening I was walking around and met again the old soap bubbles man. He gave me a sign – to bend a bit. I did. He made a huge bubble, covering my head! As I was inside of it, he whispered gently: “You are dreaming!” Well, I probably was…
