My Photo scholarship 2010 entry
Indonesia | Tuesday, October 5, 2010 | 5 photos
Recently I had the opportunity in my life to take a break. A break from mortgages, early morning meetings, rush hour traffic and credit card bills. I took a 5 month hiatus from my normal life and donned my backpack for an unscripted, unplanned journey through south-east Asia. Eager to push the boundaries of my own photographic limitations, I set out to capture more than the typical party shots and 'postcard' photos that so many backpackers tend to come home with. I wanted to show the colours and characters of Asia's many different cultures; the people and places that make Asia such a magical place to visit.
These photos represent a few of my best shots from the island of Java in Indonesia: one of my favorite photo destinations of my trip. Completely captivated by the 'rawness' of the tourism industry here, I was blown away by the natural and man-made sights of this country as well as the unmatched kindness of the local peoples. I want these photos to express the island of Java's true majesty: it's people and culture which still feel 'untainted' by Western influences.
