Kifufu: A lesson in humility, love and life

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Tanzania | Thursday, September 30, 2010 | 5 photos

I’m extraordinarily blessed. I can honestly say that at 19 years old I have traveled to three continents, and these five photos tell the story of a church service I attended in the remote village of Kifufu in Northern Tanzania.
I traveled to Tanzania with my godmother as a travel companion and friend. During our adventure we stayed in Mwanza with a family we knew, and while we were there we made a trip to Kifufu. We went to see a home my church raised money for the Ngeze family to have built, and my godmother also preached at the African Inland Church there. It’s this service that changed my life. The Kifufu people decorated the church, showered us with gifts, wrote songs in our honor and made us a feast. We were the first Americans many of them had ever seen so everyone wanted to touch us, talk to us and even follow me around as I took photos. To put it mildly, the three-hour service was the most amazing experience of my life to date.
I should be chosen for this scholarship because I belong in places like those. I should be chosen because I have a passion for adventure and a deep desire to experience the undiluted and beautiful facets of our world; Bhutan is one of those places. I deserve this, and my family deserves this too for all their hard work, encouragement and support. I have an unfathomable determination to learn and live, and I should be chosen because I refuse to give anything less than my best and won’t settle for less than extraordinary. Africa taught me so much, but Bhutan could teach me so much more. My dream is to travel and photograph the world, and I’m ready for this adventure.
