A local wanders towards the village train station. At this time of year, the majority of the day in Abisko is spent in darkness.

Fishing boats and huts lie frozenly abandoned on the shores of the mighty Torneträsk (Lake Torne), just south of the village. Torneträsk hibernates under and ice sheet over a metre and a half thick.

A pylon in the hills north of the village. Even in the deep wilderness, evidence of man's presence can be found. Almost 200km above the Arctic Circle, Abisko does not witness the sun rise above the horizon in winter. Instead, the village sees a bright twilight lasting more than a couple of hours during the middle of the day. This 'daylight' is bookended by hour long periods of dusk and dawn known as the 'Blue Hour', when the village and its surroundings glow a deep blue.
