My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
France | Sunday, December 9, 2012 | 5 photos
My name is Claire Schmidt, and I am studying journalism and French at NYU. I love photography as a means of preservation, a way to relive moments frozen in time. I enjoy photographing people when they least expect it, in a sneeze or with a smile. It is an unspoken way of communicating that allows me to share an intimate experience with the person I am capturing. I especially love black and white film because there is always a risk involved. I never know if I got the perfect shot until the moment the paper is submersed in the chemicals. It is always a surprise. Through this program I would like to hone my craft, to find more effective ways to tell a story through photographs. I would also like to expand my knowledge of digital photography, color, and composition. My dream is to work at a travel magazine, where I can combine my passion for writing, languages, and photography. Growing up I have always been soft-spoken. Photography has helped me find my voice by allowing me to express myself. Through my photographs I hope to shine a light on other individuals or communities that are always in the background, afraid to speak, but have an interesting and worthwhile story to tell.
