My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Peru | Friday, January 11, 2013 | 4 photos

I have always loved stories, but I have had trouble telling my own; I started taking pictures to tell the story for me. Every time I look through the viewfinder I personalize the shot and ask myself, will my grandma know what is happening here, will she feel my experience, will she understand the significance of the scene and understand why this moment is worth capturing?
I will soon graduate from the Ecotourism program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. Through this program I have combined my passion to understand other cultures with my hobby of photography and have begun to build a career in visual story telling. Through my education and my experiences traveling I have become increasingly entranced by the differences in cultures. When I travel, I search for the genuine experience; as authenticity is a subjective entity, this can be allusive and many have trouble finding it. I believe that life's true moments are outside everyone's front door on an average day. That is what I capture in my photographs. Whether I step out the door on a day of celebration or of tragic loss, I want to take photographs that show that day for what it is - I want to tell that day's story.
