I decided to create The Senses of
Traveling, because I am a firm believer that the
best way to empathize and understand another person is to recognize where they
come from: their culture and experiences.
I planned my piece by ensuring that it
would look like a traveler’s video with no interviews from anyone, but just an
overall look into the Peruvian culture. While there were minor challenges here
and there, the biggest challenge while shooting a project overseas is dealing
with the equipment when you are on a bus, train or plane. I was not able to carry a tripod as I
was sleeping in hostels and going around towns via bus, so everything was
handheld.
My ambition as a documentary filmmaker is
to be able to introduce a variety of people and places to an audience who is
not able or unwilling to open their eyes to the wonders that encompass the
world. This can mean showing the social injustices in Moldova or the political
unrest in Bali or even documenting a coming-of-age ritual in Papua New Guinea. My goal is simply to present a story
and have the audience decide what it means to them.
