Day 39: Hospital Visit

KENYA | Thursday, 28 March 2013 | Views [298]

Kelsey and I went into Nairobi today. I had every intention of meeting up with my friend Michelle and going to the National Museum, where some of the earliest hominid remains are located, including the Leakey’s “Lucy.” I have been waiting to go to the museum for a while, and I was so excited. However, it wasn’t to be. Kelsey has been experiencing intense stomach pains, and they became excruciating on the matatu ride in. As soon as we got off, we got a cab to the hospital. After 2 hours and multiple tests, it was determined that she had a parasite. Luckily it was something that could be cured with drugs, which she was given, and is now feeling much better. It’s crazy how cheap medical care is here compared to back home: even without insurance, she paid about 35 dollars total for everything, including her prescriptions.

Unfortunately, the museum closes at 5:30 and I wanted more than 2 hours to experience it. Instead, Kelsey and I spent the afternoon shopping in the giant Maasai Market in City Centre. It’s crazy how much we have not only adapted to the culture, but are able to move and operate comfortably in such an environment. I just remember how terrified and overwhelmed I was at my first Maasai Market, and yesterday I was able to move around like a pro. My bargaining could still use some work, as I’m not quite tough enough or want anything badly enough to be truly adamant and fight for things, but even when people touched me I didn’t freak out. I’ve definitely come a long way since day 1! I was able to get most of the presents that I needed to, which was a relief; I really dislike shopping. As for the museum, I’m planning to spend the day there on Friday before our overnight bus to Mombasa!
