Feeding the hungry

Summer is still hanging on in Redding, much to my delight. I'm told it's unusual, but no complaints coming from me. This morning I went for a walk and I was thinking about one of the stories I heard yesterday afternoon. There was a town that was being traumatised by a wolf. St Francis of Assisi went into the woods to find the wolf. The wolf saw him and charged full speed at him. But St Francis was so full of the presence of God, that when he told the wolf to stop, he obeyed abruptly. He continued to speak to the wolf and said 'I know you are doing this because you are hungry. If we make an agreement with the town that they will feed you, will you leave them alone?' The wolf apparently held out its paw in agreement. So the wolf followed him into the town and lived there peacefully for the rest of his life. Is that merely a legend? Or is it possible to be so close to God and so full of His presence that the world is transformed around us wherever we go?
