The early risers. When you sit on the edge of Lake Kivu and you wait for the sun to rise, quite often it is filled with chants and excitement. In the morning, before the sun even peeks over Rwanda's thousand hills, you see in the distance that there are numerous fishers out doing the day's work before people even come out to the fish markets. The air is filled with Kinyarwandan songs and the smell of fresh fish.

If you look into her eyes, you don’t just see a woman whom is complying with her daily routine of walking miles to find some clean water. You don’t see fatigue and anguish. You don’t see brokenness and remorse. In fact, when you look into her eyes, you see Amahoro, and that means Peace. You find deep within, that not only is she a survivor of the 1994 genocide, she is also most joyous and willing. There’s something special about the Rwandan people, they are recovering from destruction and they find within themselves the ability to persevere and empower others to build a better life for the people around them.

The devotion of the Rwandan population can leave a person astonished. When a country experiences so much death and grieving, it is hard to imagine that they would all be so faithful to their religions. But it is true in this country, no other name is praised more than the name of God. They come by the hundreds and they all pack into the smallest of churches to sing praises and worship their God. It was truly incredible to see that people who suffer still find that they can believe in something greater than themselves.
