My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited
Vietnam | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos
With a new passion for exploring the representation of experience thorough photography, I travelled to Vietnam, using the camera as an empowering tool with deaf and mute youth. We learnt from each other and I saw how imagery could capture more than words, with the camera becoming an extension of ones self. I returned to Vietnam, exploring ways in which I could use the camera as a similar tool and I’ve tried to represent and celebrate what it means to be Vietnamese. In modern Vietnam foreigners are welcomed into traditional families but certain customs remain of upmost importance. The worship of ancestors, importance of birth, ceremony of marriage and respect for tradition and old age continue to be celebrated across the country. Communicating through the art of photography, as the deaf children did so eloquently is something I hope to build on for life. The itinerary in Oman is a fantastic opportunity to learn from an experienced photographer, using a diary to help organise and share my thoughts. I see this as a foundation from which to explore our diverse world with more confidence, sharing stories, insights and interactions with people and places with wider audiences.
