After a few boring days on the bed with Ted, Granny bear and Lamb Chops, I was craving some excitement. Being thrown on the floor each night to share the carpet with my three companions whilst Grandma and Gramps slept left a lot to be desired. Particularly with the spiders and other insects that seemed to come out at night. Mummy would not have been pleased.
Somehow, Gramps picked up on these vibes. One night, he picked Ted and myself up, looked at us closely, and said with a leery grin "Wanna came to the cricket with me?"
The tone of his voice should have warned me, but I was so overcome with excitement, I agreed. Ted just lay there in his usual stupid way and said nothing. God I crave an intelligent conversation.
In a blur, into a bag we both went again. Zip went the zipper (How else do zippers go? They hardly go bang, bang, boom do they?)
On this occasion, our wait was not as long.
Once again, I could hear Gramps cursing as he put us, and other things into the car. We waited a while, and then I could hear Dane and Gramps exictedly talking. Then I could hear Gramps swearing VERY LOUDLY. I don't think he has any chance of ever going to heaven.
B/F battery he screamed. "AGAIN" he violently articulated.
Silence. Suddenly, I felt the bag move as Gramps took us out of the car again. And everything else.
A car arrived. A new, calm voice was heard. "She'll be right mate, I'll have you going in a minute or two" Some clanking and other noises could be heard and suddenly the car motor burst into motion with lots of revving. "These cars are bad for this mate" the new voice said. "Just make sure you turn your headlights off next time"
I could hear a grateful Gramps thanking the new voice, who left shortly after. "Come on Dane" called Gramps, 'it's time"
So off we went - Gramps, Dane, Ted and myself - off to the cricket, whatever that was.
After several hours of travel, we arrived at where ever it was we were going to. Cricket.
Well, Ted and I had the priveledge of being yanked from our bags and being placed on a cupboard, jsut sitting there.
I could Dane and Gramps talking at night time, in a rather slurry way, from time to time. And a chainsaw would start up as well.
But suddenly something was happening. "C'mon" said Gramps "its time to watch some cricket"
Back in the bag we went, but not for long this time.
This time, the bag was opened by a man in a uniform, who peered into our bag and ran his hand around our bodies. "Another of Gramps' rather grotty friends I thought" But instead of the usual fondling and other unmentionable actions we were normally exposed to, this man said to Gramps "What's your story mate, can't bear to parted from your teddy? What's wrong with ya?"
Gramps stared at the man and hurriedly zippped up the bag again.
A short time later Ted and I were bathed in sunlight and sitting on the fence.
We spent the day watching cricket with lots of other people.
We watched some man called Tendulkar, who everybody got very excited about.
We have decided we don't need you any more Mummy, because Gramps looks after us really well......but please stay in touch.
