The plan for today was to fly from Aukland (north island) to Dunedin (bottom of the south island) and Gareth's flight was meant to land 10 mins after mine so we would meet up and head to his house. However, the winds in Wellington where he was located caused his flight to be cancelled. SO his Uncle picked me up at the airport and I spent the day with his grandmother. His uncle works for a home that houses people who have brain injuries. The house was putting on a BBQ fundraiser to raise money for people with brain injuries. The first thing we did for the day was help volunteer at the BBQ booth. One of the patients cooked the sausages and onions, his grandmother put the bread and ketchup together for the sausage and my job was to handle the money. They thought it was a good idea for me to deal with the money so that I could get comfortable with the local currency. I did a pretty damn good job! We volunteered for an hour and then his grandmother and I took the bus into town. She walked me all around town, through the shops, and to the Information center so that I could pick up some local brochures. After that, we took the bus to the beach. Because of the unusual high winds, there were tons of surfers in the ocean. The weather here is very chilly so I can only imagine how cold the water was. At some point during my trip, I am going to get on a surf board!
