My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

My name is Cameron Blair and I am an undergraduate student, studying social sciences and cultural studies at Southern Cross University in Sydney, Australia. My theme for this scholarship is leisure and sport. It is based on the activities performed by Filipino men on a regular basis in the Philippines. My aim is to visually communicate this kind of culture that exists on the southern most island of Mindanao.

What interested me most when shooting this series was the noticeable amount of male orientated activities that exists in the Philippines. Through my photo essay I want to explore this highly genderized cultural phenomenon that exists in South East-Asia. This photo essay covers different generations of men ranging from children, young men, to adults.

I want to become a professional travel photographer so I can experience new places in the world whilst telling stories with images that canvass a wide range of opinions and cultural differences. I feel that visual communication, when done effectively, has a far greater impact than any other journalistic medium.

From this scholarship I’d like to further my practical skills in approaching people from different cultures. I’d like to work on my patience, camera craft, and photographic eye. I also want to master the ability of reading light in order to capture sharp and powerful images. I want to win this scholarship so I can shadow an experienced professional photographer, that can teach me skills that can only be taught by those who work in the field.

Through my photography and cultural studies, I hope to correspond and communicate to the world that some of the most beautiful and tragic, awe-inspiring events that confront our everyday lives is something that needs to be recorded, documented and watched, through the eye of a camera.
