Ushuaia, Rio Grande, Porvenir, Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine to El Calafate

CHILE | Saturday, 22 December 2007 | Views [661]

North of Ushuaia the scenenary becomes desolate again and its only close to Puerto Natales that the southern tip of the mighty Andes becomes visible.

We arrived at Torres del Paine Park late in the day and the mountains were all cloud covered. After a bitterly cold night at the Pehoe camp site, we were greated with a clear sky and a brilliant view of the mountains the next morning.

We spent two days in El Calafate admiring the impressive Perito Moreno glacier. This 50 m high and 4 km wide glacier is one of the biggest advancing glaciers in the world. It is an unforgettable experience to just stand there and listen to the cracking sounds which is sometimes followed by loud thunder and a huge chunk of ice breaking loose and falling into the lake. No photograph can do justice to this amazing experience.
