Carretera Austral - Chile Chico,El Maiten Cochrane, Coihaque to Futaleufu

This section of the Carretera Austral is something spectacular and an adventure biker or cyclist´s dream.

The 1200 km road from Peurto Mont to Peurto Yungay ( and more recently to Villa O Higgins ) is mostly a single track gravel road with exceptions around Coihaique and Chaiten. It is deemed the holy grail by many adventure bikers and cyclists and it is truly an amazing experience to travel for hundreds of kms along rivers, green valleys with snowcapped mountains in the backdrop and then to rough camp ( agreste camping in Spanish ) alongside the road. Running roughly 120 kms parallel to the routa 40 the area is completely different with green valleys resembling scenery from Switzerland. This is due to a kind of micro climate created by the Andes. The rural lifestyle, especially in the South, adds to the unique experience. We vowed to come back and cycle the complete route one day.
