My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Ethiopia | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos

My most recent travel experience, a month filming a documentary in Tanzania and Ethiopia, showed me that my passion for travel and for photography can serve as a powerful tool for awareness. While my personal perspective and experiences can only tell my version of the story, I learned that I still have the power to share my experiences and to bring a small part of another end of the world back home.

As I had been traveling in Africa, one of my goals was to bring back a piece of the continent that those at home in the USA might not realize existed. Everyone could tell me about the famine, war, and poverty of Africa, but I was hoping to pull away a few other slivers of the continent. I came home with images and stories of green landscapes, hard-working folks breaking into an industry not unfamiliar to my Los Angeles hometown, and interactions with so many people who break the mold of what many outsiders know about Africa.

Though I stand only as one individual, I am excited to hone both my photography and my travel skills so that I can continue to share these pieces of the story in a way that intrigues my viewers and helps spread a different side of the places we think we know.
