When the boats become locked in by ice, fishermen in Nida carry on by building ice-fishing shanties and catching smelt by the boatload. * The photo is of one of the boats docked in the lagoon shortly after the ice has receded in the spring.

Fishing is a way of life for the locals, all year round and on both sides of the 'Spit.

It's said, among Lithuanians, that if you travel to Nida then you are expected by your friends and family to bring back smoked fish. In the small town the fish is caught, smoked and available for purchase; it only takes a day for the fish swimming in the sea to become a fish smoked and on your plate.
