With more than 250 mouths to feed at the sanctuary, food preparation is a vital and constant task. Here Romaine, one of the gorilla keepers, prepares a favourite - sweet potatoes - for the animals.

Electricity is a luxury that can't always be relied on at the sanctuary, so work is sometimes carried out in improvised surroundings. Vets Yusuf and Djibri carry out a health-check on a young chimpanzee, who, amongst other things, will be tested for TB. Chimpanzees are susceptible to many human diseases and measures such as these help to ensure that the population of the sanctuary remains healthy at all times.

Thanks to the dedicated work carried out at the sanctuary, orphans such as Nanga, pictured here playing in the rain, have the opportunity to live with their own kind in beautiful forest surroundings. Sadly, the same isn't true for the many thousands of their kind who are estimated to be killed each year to fuel the illegal bushmeat trade.
