My Photo scholarship 2011 entry
Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
When I take photos, I live in the moment so it can take my mind off everything. I don’t always go out with a photographic vision of what or how I would like to shoot. Instead I try to look at things differently and with fresh eyes. I usually enjoy photographing landscapes, cityscapes and wildlife but taking these images of the aftermath of the Stanley Cup Riots pushed me to step out of my comfort zone. There was abundant coverage of the riots; fire setting, looting and vandalism in Vancouver, on the night the local hockey team, the Canucks, lost the Stanley Cup final. But what about the morning after? I heard locals had united to clean up their city so I picked up my camera to document it. To show what the majority not the minority think of this great city.
As an intensive care nurse, with each experience comes new learning. The same is true for my photography. I know this scholarship will improve my images and my technique enough to enable me to take my photography to the next level; to become more accomplished, to share my vision with others and to make an artistic contribution. It will make me happy to provide the lens through which others may view the world differently, even for a brief moment.
