A Long Winter in Beijing

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

China | Saturday, July 6, 2013 | flickr photos

Many people say they've loved photography since they first got a camera. But I only learned to love it when I learned to really see: to observe and understand. Before that, I struggled to enjoy photography. Now, seeing people and telling their stories through images is a key part of my life.

I'm self taught, self driven. And I'm determined to succeed, to tell stories that otherwise won't be told. I aim for subtlety. Like life, my photos don't hit you in the face. I look for nuance in a scene and to portray its essence in an image. I pursue this steadily: I've exhibited, submitted work, and curated a show. Above all, I built a refined, mature style, based on acute observation and the timeless elements of composition and light.

My entry shows I can visit a place for a day and tell a meaningful story. I want this opportunity because I need a mentor's professional wisdom to help me to the next level. I want to learn how pros pitch stories, advocate their work, plan and tackle a brief, and get it done.

With your help, I can succeed. Choose me if you want someone with a mature and determined vision and above all, a hard worker who'll take the chance with both hands and really use it.
